Dear Friends,
What funny summer weather we are having - last week I had two inches (yes inches - I have not gone metric yet!!) of hailstones on my lawn and torrential rain. The plants and flowers in bloom certainly took a battering. I know that only a couple of miles down the road people did not experience the same weather but I can assure that I do not need my specs changing!

As usual, I would ask that if any of you who are aware of the death of a retired colleague to let me know ASAP as I do not receive news from West Yorkshire Police until their names appear in their magazine “
The Beat” which is often too long after the event to send the family a card or to offer the use of the Branch funeral drape.
INJURY ON DUTY PENSIONS
Still awaited is the Home Office promised revision of Circular 46/2004.
The LAWS case decision was expected to be reported on 10th June 2010 but is now subject to an appeal - therefore date as yet unknown.
Although Home Office advice to all Police Forces is to defer any further reviews West Yorkshire Police are still conducting reviews. If you receive a questionnaire
you need to tell them about benefits you are receiving, disability living allowance but not the actual amount. You do not need to answer questions about the amount of your savings/investments.
WEBSITE
Please remember to change you email address if you have changed ISP provider or your actual email address –and log on to receive broadcasts. If you notify me of a change of email address I will only change the database - you must "log on the website and register to receive broadcasts"
The website went live in March 2009 and has been growing steadily. The number of NARPO members logged in to receive broadcasts is consistent at roughly 350 but the number of "visits" per month is averaging 1000+.
This means that a considerable number of people are using the site other than those who actually contribute financially towards it.
It appears that non members are using the site and gaining all the information for free, but for which members are paying. There is no incentive for them to join Narpo.
If a meeting, reunion or other event is advertised via the site, at present this information is available to anyone on the internet and therefore could be a security threat.
The matter of making the site available to members only was discussed at a WY Narpo Group meeting in 2009 and at that time it was decided that until more people knew of the site - it would be available to all. The committee is of the opinion that the time is now right for access to site to be restricted to members".
Shortly you will require your Branch number and personal membership number to access the site (most of it). If you are unsure of your Branch and personal membership number please contact me.
Branches will have the final veto of how much of their pages are "open to all"
NARPO TRAVEL INSURANCE (CLICK FOR INFO)
From the number of call which I have received it would appear that the travel insurance is proving very popular. Don't delay if you want this cover and apply before reaching your 85th birthday!
VAT INCREASE
Do not forget that the VAT rate will rise from January 2011 from 17.5 to 20% so considerable savings can be made if you purchase more expensive items before the New Year.FOR THOSE MEN WITH WIVES AND PARTNERS HERE IS A DITTY TO MAKE YOU MORE WISE ABOUT THE WAY WOMEN THINK
NINE WORDS WOMEN USE
1 FINE : This is a word women use to end an argument when they are right and you need
to shut up
2 FIVE MINUTES: If she is getting dressed, this means half an hour.
Five minutes is only five minutes if you have just been given five minutes to watch
the game before helping around the house.
3 NOTHING: This is the calm before the storm. This means something and you should
be on your toes.
Arguments that begin with nothing usually end with FINE!
4 GO AHEAD: This is a dare, not permission. Don't do it!
5 LOUD SIGH: This is actually a word, but a non verbal statement
misunderstood by men. A loud sigh means she thinks you are an idiot and wonders why
she is wasting her time standing here and arguing with you about nothing
(refer back to #3 for the meaning of nothing)
6 THAT'S OKAY: This is one of the most dangerous statements a woman can make to a
man. That's okay means she wants to think long and hard before deciding how
and when you will pay for your mistake.
7 THANKS: A woman is thanking you, do not question or faint. Just say you're welcome.
(I want to add in a clause here - This is true, unless she says " Thanks a lot" - that is
pure sarcasm and she is not thanking you at all. DO NOT say "you're welcome".
That will bring on a "whatever"
8 WHATEVER: I a woman's way of saying ..................you!
9 DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT, I GOT IT. Another dangerous statement, meaning this is
something that a woman has told a man to do several times, but is now doing it herself.
This will later result in a man asking "What's wrong"
For the woman's response refer to #3
This is intended for all the men to warn them about arguments they can avoid if they
remember the terminology
AND
For all the women to give them a good laugh because they know it's true!
(Courtesy of Don Widdall for this bit of humour)
There will be a quiz night/ social evening with a free finger buffet and raffle prizes

for all members and friends wishing to attend. Why not come along and put your old grey matter to the test or just have a chat with a few old colleagues - either way you are most welcome and I would appreciate knowing how many are coming for catering purposes.
