The geographical area known as West Yorkshire was formed by local authority amalgamations in 1968 and 1974.

In 1968 The West Yorkshire Constabulary was formed from the merger of
The West Riding Constabulary, Halifax, Huddersfield, Dewsbury, Doncaster, Barnsley and Wakefield City.

In 1974 the creation of Metropolitan Districts brought together all of the cities,
former Boroughs and part of the former West Riding of Yorkshire and created the new Metropolitan counties of
Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield, Kirklees, and Calderdale.

The 1974 amalgamations brought in Leeds City and Bradford City and lost Skipton, Harrogate, Goole, Doncaster, and Barnsley
This was then known by the name of West Yorkshire Metropolitan Police
.

West Yorkshire Narpo Branches reflect allegiances to the previous forces and now have eight separate Narpo Branches which are :-

Leeds and District NARPO, Wakefield NARPO, Keighley NARPO,
Halifax NARPO, Huddersfield NARPO, Dewsbury NARPO,
Bradford NARPO. ( Pontefract NARPO. is not a participating member of this website)
