BRUCHE POLICE TRAINING CENTRE
A MEMORY OF BRUCHE
I was an Instructor at Bruche Training Centre between 1967 and 1970, when I was one of two female Sergeants primarily responsible for the welfare of female recruits and to give "Specialist" Lectures to them, i.e. Sexual Offences, Care of Female Prisoners etc. I was later given my own class of recruits, the first female Instructor to do so at that Training Centre, and later I was the Instructor in charge of Overseas Officers for C.I.D. courses and Student Instructor Courses.
My fellow Instructors included officers from Liverpool City, Birkenhead Borough, Chester, Bolton, Burnley, Oldham, Rochdale, Manchester City, Salford City, Lancashire County, all separate Forces at that time, and I took a lot of stick for being the only officer from that inferior (as they put it) county, Yorkshire!
I spent some very happy times there but one memory of those days which remains with me is that when a female HMI, Miss Wren, came to visit and she was entertained by what was called at Bruche, a "RamSammy", an entertainment put on by the students and Instructors. Everyone was in their best and the HMI was seated at a table with the Commandant and his wife when a student acting as waiter brought a loaded tray full of drinks to the table. Unfortunately he put the tray only half way on the table, and when he removed a glass from it, the whole tray spilled its contents into the lap of the HMI! The Commandant's wife, trying in vain to dab up the beer, said to comfort the HMI, "It'll wash, it's only nylon" to which the HMI replied in an icy voice, "It's a Dior original, and the beer has gone right through to my pants!" At least we refrained from laughing until she had gone to her room to change!.
