Christmas Luncheon, which will be held on 5th December at the Masonic Rooms.  The cost per head is £12, as last year and the booking form, which is self explanatory, is attached. Last year a few members who left it too late were unable to book as the list was full, so please get your application in early to avoid disappointment, as only the first 120 will be accepted!

Ladies’ Section.  Betty Byram has arranged the next Ladies’ Lunch on the 8th September.  Remember ladies, this is a free lunch and all female members, wives and widows are welcome.   If you wish to attend, ring Betty to book your place.

A “Reet Yorkshire Day Out”   Our Social Secretary, Mick Tyne, says:-

On Thursday, 2nd September 2010 at 9.30am our coach will leave Javelin House Police Station, Eccleshill for Sewerby Hall and Gardens, East Yorkshire.   The Hall has multi award winning landscaped gardens, exhibitions, which change regularly and there is a permanent exhibit of the Amy Johnson memorabilia collection, plus a piano recital in The Orangery at 2pm.   There are also shops, tea room,  putting green, woodland walks and zoo (not just for the children)

The entrance ticket for the venue allows you to come and go freely, perhaps with a visit to the village with sea view pub, village tea room, and model village.  The Land Train (half hourly at approx £2) will also be available if you wish to take the short journey along the cliff tops to spend time in Bridlington. For anyone wanting to go directly to Brid, the coach will drop off and pick up at both Brid and Sewerby.  We will then set off back at approx 4.30pm,  stopping off en route for fish and chips at the Wetherby Whaler near York (alternatives if necessary can be arranged by request).

Ow much! (The Yorkshire Battle Cry) I can ‘ear thi  say.   Well, tha don’t get owt for nowt nowadays, and t’cost for this trip’ll be £10 each.   Aye, only £10 each!!! A reet bargain I can hear thi say!

To reserve your seats contact Mick Tyne by telephone or by ‘e’ mail (please don’t worry if he doesn’t confirm your booking for a few days, as he is away during early August and he will contact you as soon as he gets back)

Following confirmation, please send a cheque (made payable to Bradford NARPO) to Michael at his address. (For those of you who are reading this on your computer, full details of how to book for the functions will be given in the copy of the Newsletter you will shortly receive by post.)

I think you will agree that it looks like being a great trip!

Membership Matters.

I am please to say that I have no sad news to pass on to you this quarter.

Many other Branches are having a reduction in recruiting but, unlike them, I am happy to report that our recruitment is in a healthy state.   The Pre Retirement Courses are now run by an independent non- police body who are not interested in NARPO and we no longer have a direct input into the classes.   Persons attending the Courses are supplied with NARPO publicity and application forms, but the classes are a long time before they retire, and NARPO is probably soon forgotten. I suggest that it is no coincidence that the new Bradford Branch entry on the www.narpowestyorkshire.co.uk site  has consistently had the largest number of “hits” since we joined it and more Bradford retirees are interested in joining us.

I am happy to welcome four new recruits.  Iain Exley (Son of former P.C.386 Ken Exley), M/s Diane Watts, Mr. John Andrew Downie, and Mr. Richard Foucher. We look forward to meeting them at future Social Events.

We also welcome Mr. David Bruce, who has transferred to our Branch from Leeds, and say farewell to Mr. Peter Worthington who has transferred to Leeds (No transfer fees being paid for either!)

Well, that’s a lot for you to digest so I will say farewell for this issue and leave you to enjoy the rest of our Summer.   Don’t forget to inform me of any member who is experiencing welfare problems, or who is in poor health or of any problems that you have.   In the words of the popular song, “We can sort it out!”

A few thoughts on ageing:-

“If I had my life to live over again, I’d make the same mistakes – only sooner”

Tallulah Bankhead.

“In the end, it’s not the years in your life, it’s the life in your years”

Abraham Lincoln

“You know by the time you reach my age, you’ve made plenty of mistakes if you have lived your life properly”

Ronald Reagan
